The Gospel of John, Chapter 14

[Note: The statement by Jesus which is conventionally printed as the first part of 14:1, I have printed as the last statement of 13:38, following Jesus' word to Peter, so it does not appear in verse 1, below. There is no break in the flow Jesus' words, between chapters 13 and 14; the chapter divisions are arbitrary]

1. "You folks are constantly trusting, believing and continue faithful unto God; you are also progressively trusting and believing on into Me (or: Keep on believing and putting faith into the midst of God, and also keep on putting your trust, confidence and loyalty into Me; or: You are presently trusting God, so continue trusting in Me, too). [note: verbs can be either indicative or imperative; cf 2 Cor. 5:1-2, 4, 6, 8]

2. "Within My Father's house (or: household) are many abodes (dwelling places; homes; rooms; [cf Rev. 21:22]). Now if not, I would at once tell you folks, because I am progressively passing (or: traveling) along to prepare and make ready a place IN you (or: for you; with and among you folks).

3. "Even if I should journey on and prepare (make suitable, fit and appropriate) a place (or: a spot; a position; a role) IN you folks (or: with, among and for you), I am now presently (or: progressively; repeatedly; habitually) going and coming again, and then, I will progressively take you folks in My arms and receive you to Myself, directing you toward Myself so as to be face to face with Me, to the end that where I, Myself, am (or: exist) you folks also can continue being (or: would ongoingly exist).

4. "And to the place under, where I Myself am progressively leading the way (or: where I am submissively going), you have seen and know the Way (or: path; road)."

5. Thomas then says to Him, "O Lord (Master), we have not seen nor do we know under what place You are leading the way (or: where You are humbly going), so how are we able to have seen and [other MSS: how do we] know the way (or: path)?"

6. Jesus then says to him, "I, Myself, AM the Way (or: exist being this Path), the Truth (this Reality; the Essential Essence; [cf Jn. 17:17]) and the Life. No one is presently going to, or progressively coming toward, the Father, except through Me (through means of Me, or, through the midst of Me).

7. "Since you men have personally and experientially known Me (or: If you folks had insight of Me or were acquainted with Me), you also will continue personally and experientially knowing and perceiving My Father [other MSS: you would likely have seen and now know (or: perceive) My Father, as well]. And so from right now (this moment) you are intimately, experientially and progressively knowing and recognizing Him (or: you folks continue gaining insight of Him), and have seen Him."

8. Philip then says to Him, "O Lord (Master), show us the Father (point the Father out to us), and it is continuing to be sufficient (adequate; enough) for us."

9. Jesus is then saying to him, "I continue being (I am) with you folks so much time, and yet you have not come to intimately and experientially be aware of, know and recognize Me, Philip? The person having discerned and seen Me has seen, and now perceives, the Father! How are you now saying, 'Show us (or: Exhibit or demonstrate to us; Explain for us) the Father'?

10. "Are you not continuing to trust and presently believe that it is continuously (it constantly exists being) I, Myself, within the midst of the Father, and the Father within the midst of Me (or: I Myself centered in union with the Father, and the Father centered in union with Me)? The gush-effects (results of the flow; or: utterances, declarations, words spoken) which I, Myself, am constantly saying and laying out to you folks, I do not constantly speak from Myself. But the Father, continuously dwelling and remaining (abiding; staying) within the midst of Me, is habitually (constantly) doing (making; constructing; creating; forming; performing; producing) His works (actions; deeds).

11. "Keep on trusting and progressively believe Me, that [it is] I within the midst of the Father, and the Father within the midst of Me (or: Continue having faith in Me, and by Me, because I [am] in the sphere of, and in union with, the Father, and the Father [is] in the sphere of, and in union with, Me). Otherwise (or: But if not), keep trusting and constantly believe Me (or: continue having faith in and by Me) because of the works (actions; deeds) themselves.

12. "It is certainly true (Most assuredly; Amen, amen), I am saying to you folks: the person habitually trusting and progressively believing into Me, the works (actions; deeds) which I Myself am constantly doing (habitually performing; progressively making, constructing, creating or forming) that person also will proceed doing (performing; making; creating; producing), and he or she will progressively be doing and producing greater than these, because I Myself am progressively journeying (going from one place to another; [cf vss. 2-3, above]) toward (or: facing; face-to-face with) the Father. [cf Jn. 1:1]

13. "And because [reading 'hoti an'] you would have sought in petition within, and in the sphere of, My Name (or [reading 'ho ti an']: Also whatever you could seek in petition, in union with My Designation), I will proceed doing it: to the end that the Father can (could; would) be glorified (recognized; be given a good reputation, a good opinion and a manifestation which incites praise; have an assumed appearance) within, and in union with, the Son.

14. "If you folks should petition Me for something (or: anything) within, in union with, centered in, and in the sphere of, My Name or the Designation which is Me, I Myself will proceed performing (doing; making; creating; forming) this.

15. "If you folks are habitually loving and accepting Me (or, as a subjunctive: would continue seeking union with, and fully giving yourselves to, Me), you folks WILL continue observing [other MSS, subjunctive: you folks can or should observe (or: note and keep watch over; guard and preserve; keep in view; hold in custody); other MSS, the imperative: Keep in view and take note of] My implanted goals (impartations of the finished product within; inward directives; interior purposes and destiny),

16. "and I Myself will proceed asking (making a request of) the Father, and He will proceed to be giving another Helper (One called alongside to give assistance, relief, comfort and encouragement; or: Paraclete), of like kind, to you folks - to the end that He (or: It) can continue being [other MSS: remaining and dwelling] with you folks on into the midst of this (or: the) Age - [cf vs. 26; 1 Jn. 2:1]

17. "the Spirit of the Truth (or: the spirit or breath of Reality; the Breath-effect and Attitude which is this Reality), whom (or: which) the System (world; ordered, domination arrangement of religion, politics and culture) has no power (is unable) to receive, because it is not normally seeing It or perceiving It by contemplation (or: continually viewing and watching Him with attentive interest), nor is it coming to intimately or experientially know It (or: recognize Him). Yet YOU folks are progressively knowing It (or: Him) by intimate experience, because It (or: He) keeps on dwelling (remaining; abiding) alongside you folks - in your presence - and It (or: He) continuously exists (or: is; [other MSS: will continue being]) within, in union with, and among you people. [cf 2 Cor. 5:5; 1 Jn. 2:27]

18. "I will not be leaving you abandoned or be sending you off as orphaned ones (or: folks without family). I am progressively and repeatedly coming to (or: toward, and face to face with,) you people. [comment: compare vss. 16-17 with vs. 18, and with 1 Jn. 2:1; Who, then, is it that is coming?]

19. "Yet a little [while; longer] and the domination System (world; ordered arrangement of religion and culture) no longer continues viewing (attentively watching) Me, but YOU people are constantly watching (attentively and contemplatively viewing) Me. Because I, Myself, am continuously living, you folks will also continue living [other MSS: will also from, or in, yourselves keep on living].

20. "Within (or: In the sphere of) That Day you yourselves will personally be coming to realize, and then will continue intimately and experientially knowing, that I Myself [am; exist] within the midst of My Father, and you folks [are; exist] within the midst of, in union with, and in the sphere of, ME, and I Myself within the midst of, in union with, and in the sphere of, you people.

21. "The person continuously holding (or: constantly possessing and having) My implanted goals (impartations of the finished product within; inward directives; interior purposes and destiny) and then habitually observing (watching over to keep, protect and maintain) them - that one is (exists being) the person continuously loving, and fully giving himself to, Me. Now the one continuously loving and accepting Me will continue being loved, accepted and urged toward union [p75 reads: watched over and cared for] by (or: under) the Father, and I Myself will continue loving that person and I will progressively (or: habitually) cause Myself to be seen in clear light in him or her (or: will continue inwardly manifesting Myself by her or him; will continuously inwardly make Myself visible to her, or him; will progressively show Myself within for him, or her; or: = will continue showing to, in, or by, him or her what I am really like)."

22. Judah (Judas) - not Iscariot - is then saying to Him, "Lord (Master), what has come to be (or: has happened) that you are now about to progressively and continually show Yourself plainly (make Yourself to be inwardly seen in clear light) to us (or: in us) and not to (or: in) the world (or: domination System; ordered arrangement of the religious and political culture; aggregate of humanity)?"

23. Jesus conclusively replies, and says to him, "If anyone continues (or: would be habitually) loving, accepting, fully giving himself to, and urging toward union with, ME, he WILL continue constantly watching over so as to observe, guard, preserve keep and maintain My Word (logos: thought, idea; Blueprint; message; laid-out, patterned Information), and My Father will continue loving, fully giving Himself to, and urging toward union with, him, AND, facing toward him, WE will continue coming to him and will be progressively making (constructing; forming; creating; producing) a home (abode; dwelling place; place to stay) with him (or: at his side and in his presence).

24. "The one not habitually loving or fully giving himself to Me is not habitually observing, watching over or keeping My words (laid-out thoughts, ideas and messages), and the word (that which has been laid out; Logos; Thought; Idea; Blueprint) which you folks are continually hearing is not Mine, but rather belongs to, is from, and pertains to, the Father [Who is] sending Me.

25. "I have spoken these things to, and for, you folks while constantly remaining (dwelling; abiding) with you (in your presence; at your side, or at your house).

26. "Now the Helper (the One called alongside to aid, comfort, encourage and bring relief; the Paraclete), the set-apart Spirit (or: the Sacred Breath; the holy Breath-effect; the holy attitude), which the Father will proceed sending within, and in union with, My Name-Designation, that One will be progressively teaching you all things (everything) and will continue reminding you of (calling to your mind and causing you to think about) everything (all things) which I, Myself, said to you.

27. "I am continuously sending off (releasing away; hurling off) Joining Peace to (or: for; by; in; with) you people. My Peace (Joining) I am constantly giving to you (or: in, by, for, you folks). I, Myself, am not giving [it] to you the way (or: according as) the System (the world of religion, politics and culture) continually gives [it]. Do not let the heart of the group be constantly shaken, disturbed or agitated, neither let it be habitually timid (shrinking; responding cowardly). [Deut. 31:8; Josh. 1:9; 8:1]

28. "You heard that I, Myself, said to you, 'I am progressively leading away under (or: humbly departing, but bringing things under control), and yet I am presently progressively (or: repeatedly; habitually) coming toward (face-to-face-with) you folks.' If you had been loving and giving yourself to Me, you should have at some point been caused to rejoice, because I am progressively journeying toward the Father, because the Father is greater (or: = more important) than I.

29. "And now (at the present time) I have told you (declared [it] to you) before it comes to be (is birthed; occurs), so that whenever it would come to be (or: should occur) you people would trust, can believe, should be loyal, and may faith-it.

30. "I will no longer converse (be speaking) with you folks [about] many things, for the ruler (the one in first place; the chief) of this System (or: of this ordered arrangement of the political, economic, religious and cultural world) is progressively coming, and yet he is holding nothing within Me (or: it [i.e., the domination system] continues to have and possess nothing in Me and has no hold on Me; or: = he [note: this could refer either to the chief priest, or to Pilate] has nothing to do with Me, and there is nothing in Me that is to his advantage),

31. "but rather, even correspondingly as the Father gave an implanted goal and destiny in Me (imparted the finished purpose within, and gave an inward directive to Me), thus, and in this manner, I continue habitually performing (doing; producing and creating), to the end that this System (the ordered arrangement of the world; the system of control; religious and secular society; or: the aggregate of humanity) can come to know by experience that I am continuously loving, and fully giving Myself to, the Father. Be progressively caused to rise up, and be habitually awake and excited (or, as a middle: Now rise up)! We can (or: should) henceforth, and from this source, progressively lead the way from this place." [note: “this place” could refer to their current level of existence]
