PSALM 48
LXX, 47
By Jonathan Mitchell
A Psalm; An Ode By (or: For) the Sons of Kore; On a Second [Part] of a Sabbath (or: In a Second Sabbath)
1. Great [is] [the] LORD (= Yahweh), and [He is] worthy of exceeding praise within (or: centered in) our God's City, situated in (or: centered within) His set-apart (holy; sacred) Mountain.
2. This City of the Great King, from good roots, [is] for an effect of enjoyment of all the earth (or: [is] in a leap for joy from all this Land): mountains of Zion, the ribs (chambers; sides - Gen. 2:21) of (or: from; pertaining to) the north.
3. God is habitually recognized, and continues known by intimate experience and insight, in union with her large houses (or: within the midst of its palaces; or: centered in its strongholds and bastions), whenever He may from time to time take hold of her, in a corresponding position, and partake of her (or: receive in its place or stead, in order to help, assist and support it from the opposite, corresponding position),
4. because - look and consider - the kings from the Land (or: of the earth; which are soil) were, at one point, gathered together (or: caused to assemble): they came [other MSS: went through the midst] together - on the same mission.
5. They themselves, upon seeing (or: viewing), thus wondered and were astounded. They were troubled and disturbed; they were caused to rock and tremble; to shudder and totter.
6. Trembling took hold upon them (seized them) there (in that place): pains as with one in labor (or: pangs were there, as of a woman in travail).
7. Centered in a forceful Spirit (or: Within a violent wind - cf Job 1:19) You will progressively press together and crush ships of (or: from) Tarshish.
8. Accordingly as we have heard, thus also we see (or: have seen): in [the] City of [the] LORD (= Yahweh) of the powerful and able ones - in [the] City of our God! God laid her foundation and founded it - on into the midst of the Age [of Messiah]. Pause and think of this (or: interlude on strings).
9. We have taken under consideration (pondered; thought about) Your mercy, O God, within the midst of Your people.
10. Corresponding to (In the sphere of; According to the Pattern of) Your Name, O God, thus also [is] Your praise, upon (at; positioned on) the extremities of the earth: Your right hand [is] full of eschatological deliverance (or: a rightwising into the Way pointed out; covenant inclusion with justice, fairness and equity; a turning into the Right Direction).
11. Let Mount Zion at once be given a good attitude and a healthy frame of mind; let the daughters of Judea continuously rejoice and jump for joy, by reason of the effects of Your evaluations and decisions (or: the results of judgments from You), O LORD (- Yahweh)!
12. You folks at once go around and encircle (or: surround) Zion, and then embrace her (or: receivingly put our arms abound it). Suddenly, fully take the lead (lead the Way throughout; or: fully describe and set out the details; or: recount and make proclamation) within her towers.
13. At once set (or: place) your hearts into her power (or: unto her ability), then fully (or: correspondingly) take apart so as to observe, inspect, and analyze the constituent parts, while getting a distinct view of her large houses (or: its palaces; or: its strongholds and bastions) so that you folks can take the lead into, and fully describe the details for a different (= the next) generation:
14. that thus is (continuously exists being) our God - unto the Age, and on into the ages (lifetimes; eras and indefinite time periods) of That Age [of the Messiah]. He, Himself will continuously shepherd (feed, guide, protect, nurture and care for) us, on into the midst of those ages.
